Based off of the manga/anime of the same name, Mirai Nikki is a live action drama that tells the story of 7 people who receive a cellphone featured with a future diary app.  The diary can tell the person what’s going to happen within a few minutes or hours.  At first it’s all fun and games, but then the diary keeps telling them that they’re going to die.  As they try their best to avoid being killed, they learn that they are all part of some game where the players have to kill each other and the winner will get a chance to create their own ideal world.

It’s hard to describe this drama without  giving away any spoilers.  At first, I thought the show was okay, simply because it seemed like it was going to be about a bunch of people trying not to get killed or trying to kill each other. Luckily, it’s more than just a survival drama.  You have to just sit through the first 4-5 episodes in order to get to the good stuff.  It turns out the 7 individuals are connected with each other through some tragic event that happened in the past.  The main character, Arata, has to work with the others to figure out the identity of the person who’s pulling the strings behind this cruel game (and ultimately stop Tokyo from being destroyed).

I have mixed feelings about the acting.  Some actors were good, while others I couldn’t tell if I didn’t like the acting or the characters they portrayed.  The female protagonist, Yuno, seems to be annoying at first and then likeable at times.  While the actress who plays her seems like she’s overdramatic with her acting, I think she’s trying to portray an energetic anime version of the character.  She really does seem like she’s an anime character.

This show reminded me of two things: the jdrama Liar Game and the video game Kingdom Hearts 2.  It’s similar to Liar Game in that the players are somewhat forced to play this game where they have to win otherwise their life is practically over.  The music is also similar.  The music also reminded me of the music in Kingdom Hearts 2.  Additionally, there are certain aspects to the video game plot that are related, but I can’t really reveal it because it would probably give away too much of the plot.

I wouldn’t blame you if you’d get confused with the plot. It seems like there are 3 different parts to the plot. It definitely is worth sticking it out until the 6th episode because you get hooked. There are just so many mysteries that keep you guessing. The writers did a pretty good job of condensing the plot into 11 episodes. It’s a nice sci-fi drama to watch for a change of genre.

My Rating: (3.5/5)

One Response to “Mirai Nikki ANOTHER: WORLD”

  1. what i dont like is the difference between the manga, the anime, and the drama adaptation..all of the endings are different..the manga was great(cuz it was the original concept) it had an amazing ending…the anime was ok,the mindless violence and indept look into the character’s past caught me but the main character(Yukii) was annoying…the drama improved on the characters..toning down the mindless violence of Yuno and replacing the annoying Yukii with a more mature Arata plus they scipt it to make it more practical and probable..as if it could happen in the real world.
